A Scientist ahead of His Time

Introduction

The exhibition, along with the monographic catalogue dedicated to Dr Sima Trojanović, is a chance to remind ourselves of an exceptional contribution of one of the most significant Serbian ethnologists and the founder of the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade. As a pioneer of ethnology in Serbia, Trojanović managed to, despite numerous obstacles, lay the foundation for scientific research of folk traditions and customs. The catalogue is divided into three segments.

The first segment

includes the author’s text by the curators of the exhibition, who, in main points, introduce us to the life and work of a renowned Serbian scholar.

The second segment

is dedicated to the selected quotes from publications available in the Searchable Digital Library of the University Library ‘Svetozar Marković‘.

The third segment

contains an extensive bibliography comprised of Dr Sima Trojanović’s works, as well as works about Sima Trojanović.

Kopaonik

If we don’t take matters into our own hands for another ten years and we allow for the forest to be cut down in the old vagrant custom, we will live to see it perish and, what is more pressing, we will not be able to renew it, even if we utilize all the Kopaonik wealth for that cause…

Božić

Slava is an especially significant Serbian holiday, but as not all people celebrate the same Slava, the festivity is spread across families. On the other hand, the Serbian Orthodox Christmas is a holiday celebrated by all Serbs, which is why there are notably more exalted praises, such as “There is no Saint without Christmas” or ”Even the bird in the mountain rejoices at Christmas.”

Reviews

Considering that this catalogue can contribute to introducing a wider reading audience to the work of the prominent Serbian scientist Sima Trojanović and encourage a deeper study of his work, we propose the catalogue be published in full.
